Hafez,
excelled in lyrical poetry, is one of the most outstanding
poets and philosophers of Iran who was born in Shiraz on 14th
century. His name was Shams-uddin Mohammad, but nicknamed as
Hafez which means the memorizer of the Holy Koran. Hafez is
the most popular poet within Iran.
He
may be the most beloved and quoted of all these poets. His
principal work is the Diwan, a collection of sonnets called
Ghazal. His poems are extremely difficult to translate.
Goethe, the German philosopher tried with some success. The
whole Diwan was translated into english prose by H.
Wilberforce Clarke in 1891. John Payne, who has also
translated the Diwan Hafez, regards Hafez as one of the three
greatest poets of the world, the other two being Dante and
Shakespeare.
